“There are no happy endings in sport.”
The maxim became a bittersweet reminder of the cruelties of the game for the 24-year-old Hasan Nawaz, who single-handedly carried the hopes of entire Pakistan on his shoulders during the Asian Games 2026 gold medal match against arch-rivals India.
Chasing a target of 212, Nawaz was the only thing that stood between the Men in Blue and a top-place finish on the podium, with his heroic innings of 96 (51), laced with five fours and seven towering sixes. He arrived at the crease after Pakistan lost Usman Khan in the fifth over with the scoreboard reading 36/2 in 4.5 overs.
The Men in Green were left with a mountain to climb, needing 176 runs to win off 91 balls with a required rate of 11.60. India continued to extend their grip on the match as the equation further became 168 off 75 balls and the required rate climbed to 13.44.
An early reprieve
Having scored just four runs off his first ten balls, Nawaz tried to break the shackles but only managed to find Vaibhav Sooryavanshi at long off. Much to his good fortune, the teenager ended up dropping a dolly after a collision with Ravi Bishnoi.
Nawaz made the most of his first reprieve, sending the very next ball over the ropes to rub salt into India’s wounds. The catch drop seemed to have turned a switch inside the youngster, who began to put some clean hitting on display, putting Ravi Bishnoi to the sword.
The right-handed batter brought up his half-century off 28 deliveries, stitching a crucial 87-run partnership off 48 balls for the fourth wicket. Despite losing his partner, Hasan Nawaz was in no mood to throw in the towel and continued to fight till the end.
An un-Pakistan-like fight on display
The character Nawaz showed in the middle was quite un-Pakistan-like, as the side has repeatedly surrendered against the Men in Blue time and again in recent times. The one thing the 24-year-old learnt while fighting for a chance, aiming to rise through the ranks playing in Layyah, was to never give up. So, Nawaz chose to fight.
Having made a name for himself with his towering sixes early in his career playing in the Kashmir Premier League, Nawaz put his belligerence on display as Indian bowlers feared the worst.
Axar Patel and Shivam Dube both were taken to the cleaners as Nawaz moved towards his second T20I century, showing no signs of stopping. It took the golden arm of Jasprit Bumrah to stem the run-flow in the penultimate over, leaving Nawaz with too much to do in the final over.
Despite the loss, Nawaz scripts history
Out of the 33 required to win, Nawaz could only hit one boundary and a six before finally being dismissed on the last ball of the innings and missing out on his hundred. The youngster had a dejected look on his face as India clinched the gold medal. He sat on the pitch crestfallen, seeing his dream diminished right before his eyes.
However, his heroic effort of 96 (51), laced with five fours and seven humongous sixes, will remain etched in the history books as the highest T20I score by a Pakistani batter against India.
Years later, when people go through the scorecard, India will remain victors, but in one corner will lie Nawaz’s heroic effort, proof that one man made sure Pakistan didn’t go down without a fight.
