Mumbai Indians’ (MI) turbulent Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026) campaign sank to a new low on Wednesday, April 29, as they slumped to their sixth defeat of the season against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

After watching his team stumble in four unsuccessful run chases in the ongoing season, captain Hardik Pandya finally decided to set the tone by batting first, and his team responded with a humongous total of 243/5 in their 20 overs.

On most nights, a score of that magnitude would’ve been enough to bury the opposition. However, on the Wankhede surface that has suddenly become Mumbai’s kryptonite, their bowlers again found themselves on the receiving end of a brutal assault.

SRH tore into Mumbai’s bowling, chasing down the target in 18.4 overs to win the match by six wickets. While all of MI's bowlers were taken to the cleaners, the most disturbing sight was of Jasprit Bumrah being dismantled all around the park.

SRH tear Bumrah's reputation to pieces

The speedster has built a reputation on being the knight in shining armour for his team, as Mumbai always turned to Bumrah every time the game seemed out of reach, for his ability to silence even the noisiest batting line-ups.

However, even he couldn’t escape from the carnage from SRH and ended up leaking 54 runs from his four overs without taking any wickets, registering his third most expensive spell in IPL history.

It has been a season to forget for the MI’s pace spearhead, who went wicketless in his first five matches of the season. Known for bending matches to his will, Bumrah has uncharacteristically scalped just two wickets from eight matches at an abominable average of 132 and an economy of 8.80.

Against SRH, Bumrah was shown no mercy as Abhishek Sharma whacked him for a massive six over long on in his very first over. Travis Head also joined the charge, launching him for a 99-metre maximum in his second one where Bumrah leaked 18 runs.

Workload taking a toll on Bumrah?

In the third over, it was Heinrich Klaasen and Nitish Kumar Reddy, who milked Bumrah for 13 runs with calculated ease. The final over brought more misery as even the young Salil Aroa joined the assault, hitting him for a no-look six straight down the ground.

Throughout his spell, Bumrah looked clueless as he ran in delivery after delivery, almost burnt out with the amount of cricket he’s played over the past few months. For the first time in years, he didn’t look like a bowler dictating terms but one searching for answers.

Even Bumrah's magic has a breaking point

Every time Bumrah runs in to bowl in the ongoing IPL 2026, his face tells the story. While on most occasions he would look batters right in the eye and a plan ready up his sleeve to unsettle them, this season he has lacked that intensity and seems to be under the pump.

His forgettable IPL season is a stark reminder of the fact that even the best in the world can falter amid a relentless workload, proving that he’s a human after all.

The person who transformed the way people looked at Indian fast bowlers by becoming a match-winner in every format and condition made us realise that even he has a breaking point. While teams look at Bumrah whenever in dire need of a wicket or to control things, the speedster has shown us that his magic can also fade if not handled properly.
