Over the past few years in the Indian Premier League (IPL), the spotlight has often belonged to the batters as sixes go into the stands almost every second, leaving bowlers searching for answers. However, on some nights, bowlers also have their say in the middle by weaving their magic on the white cherry and making it dance to their tunes.

At Eden Gardens on Saturday, it was Sunil Narine’s magic which ensured that Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) campaign in the Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026) remained alive with a clinical 29-run victory against Gujarat Titans (GT).

Beneath the fireworks of Finn Allen (93 off 35), Angkrish Raghuvanshi (82* off 44), and Cameron Green (52* off 28), Narine produced yet another spell that reminded the cricketing world why he remains one of the greatest T20 bowlers of all time.

When most KKR bowlers were smashed all around the park, the off-spinner again stunned everyone with his miserly spell, registering figures of 2/29 in four overs. The 37-year-old veteran has almost become the cheat code for KKR in an era of cricket that shows no mercy for bowlers.

Narine remains unconquerable in an unforgiving era

Narine holds the best economy rate (6.79) in the history of IPL, among bowlers who’ve bowled a minimum of 255 overs. His season economy has also never crossed 8, despite the tournament becoming an absolute run fest since 2024.

The Modern-day T20 batting is completely ruthless, with flat pitches, shorter boundaries, and fearless batting turning even good deliveries into boundary balls. Yet Narine has somehow remained untouched by the madness, still possessing unreal numbers.

Against Gujarat, he was again a calming influence on the team amid all the chaos, with his every delivery proving to be gold dust for KKR.

Playing his 200th IPL game, Narine struck on his very first ball, getting Nishant Sindhu (1 off 4) holed out at long off, while giving away just one run in his first over. He was taken on by Shubman Gill in his second over, who hit him for two sixes to get 13 runs off him.

KKR's timeless match-winner does it again

After giving another 11 runs in his third one, he returned to bowl his final over at a crucial stage of the game as GT required 71 runs to win from the last four overs with Shubman Gill (85 off 49) and Jos Buttler (57 off 35) well-set at the crease.

Narine took just two deliveries to seal the game in his team’s favour, getting Gill caught at deep square leg. In his milestone match, he stood up for the team when they needed him the most, living up to his reputation of being a true game-changer in T20 cricket.

Earlier in the season, he once again proved his class by bowling a remarkable super over against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), giving away just one run.

In his illustrious IPL career, Narine has repeatedly delivered on the biggest occasions, producing decisive spells in crunch moments. It was fitting that on a night when Eden Gardens cheered for power-hitting and relentless aggression, the loudest statement came from a bowler who’s now built a legacy around doing the impossible under pressure.
