Just a few weeks ago, Rajasthan Royals’ campaign in the Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026) looked like a story destined for glory. They were fearless, fluent and unstoppable, which made them the early title contenders.

However, their campaign has suddenly gone off-track as a massive 77-run hammering from Gujarat Titans (GT) at Sawai Mansingh Stadium has pushed them out of the top four for the first time since the beginning of the season.

The Riyan Parag-led side has dropped to the fifth spot in the IPL 2026 points table with 12 points from 11 matches. Rajasthan had a dreamy beginning to their campaign, winning their first four fixtures on the trot.

With Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal firing at the top, while Jofra Archer and Nandre Burger being at their menacing best, Rajasthan looked primed for a top-two finish.

However, over-reliance on a few players has exposed the gaping holes in their playing combination, as RR have now lost five out of their last seven games. The back-to-back losses have given them a wake-up call at the most crucial stage of the tournament.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi carrying RR's batting burden

In the batting department, RR have been heavily dependent on their wonder kid Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who’s been the heartbeat of their batting line-up with 440 runs from 11 innings.

Yashasvi Jaiswal (315 runs) and Dhruv Jurel (314 runs) have also made solid contributions. However, the poor form of captain Riyan Parag (207 runs from 10 innings) and Shimron Hetmyer (78 runs, 7 innings) has been a major worrying factor for the 2008 champions.

At the beginning of the season, it seemed that RR had now found the most formidable new-ball attack of the season in Jofra Archer and Nandre Burger.

Overdependence on Archer exposes bowling frailties

Their raw pace and aggression rattled oppositions regularly, helping RR pick a joint-highest 21 wickets inside the powerplay this season.

However, out of those 21 scalps, nine alone have come from Archer. But in the fixtures, where the speedster hasn’t been able to strike early, RR have been left searching for answers, unable to stop the mayhem.

The spin department has largely been ineffective, with Ravindra Jadeja and Ravi Bishnoi failing to recreate their magic from the first few matches.

Can Rajasthan revive campaign?

Hence, the problems are aplenty for Rajasthan with just three more games remaining in the league stage. The hamstring injury to Riyan Parag has further added to their woes, with the captain not there to prevent the ship from sinking.

With each remaining fixture, now almost turning into a virtual knockout, the margin for error has vanished for Rajasthan. They’re in desperate search of a Royal team performance that takes them into the playoffs after a two-year gap.
