Mumbai Indians (MI) endured a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign, finishing ninth on the points table with just four wins and 10 defeats from 14 matches. The five-time champions looked a shadow of their former selves, struggling to compete consistently throughout the season.
With the IPL 2027 auction approaching, MI must address several key issues if they are to script another successful chapter in their illustrious history.
Here are three major weaknesses MI need to address at the IPL 2027 auction to emerge as genuine title contenders once again:
#1 Over-reliance on Jasprit Bumrah
Mumbai Indians' over-reliance on Jasprit Bumrah was evident throughout IPL 2026. The pace spearhead endured an uncharacteristically poor campaign, managing only four wickets in 13 matches at an average of 102.50 and an economy rate of 8.36.
Bumrah's lack of penetration hurt the team significantly, but what made matters worse was the inability of the other pacers to step up. Deepak Chahar picked up eight wickets in as many matches but conceded runs at a staggering economy rate of 10.39. With Bumrah struggling for rhythm and control, MI desperately needed Chahar to shoulder more responsibility. However, the right-arm pacer failed to inspire confidence with his performances.
#2 Trent Boult's declining effectiveness
MI spent INR 12.5 crore to retain Trent Boult for the 2026 season, but the veteran New Zealander failed to justify his hefty price tag. In five matches, Boult managed only two wickets at an average of 94.00 and an economy rate of 11.62.
Boult has been a tremendous servant for Mumbai Indians, but at 37, he appears to be past his peak. The left-arm seamer may no longer possess the same wicket-taking threat that made him one of the most feared bowlers in IPL history. As a result, MI must carefully evaluate their options, as retaining him for another season could be a significant risk.
#3 Wankhede under siege
Mumbai Indians' record at the Wankhede Stadium had long been among the best in the IPL. Heading into the 2026 season, they had won 57 of their 92 matches at the venue while losing just 35.
However, that formidable record took a major hit during IPL 2026, with MI losing five of their seven home matches. Re-establishing Wankhede as a fortress must be a priority. To achieve that, the franchise needs to identify the right playing combinations and build a squad better suited to maximising home conditions.
