The highly anticipated clash of the Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026) between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) once again failed to live up to expectations as CSK turned it into a one-sided affair.
The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led side comfortably thrashed their fiercest rivals by eight wickets, chasing down a target of 160 with 11 balls to spare. What was once the league’s most intensely contested fixture has lost its charm in recent years.

Termed the ‘El Classico’ of the IPL, every year the MI vs CSK clash served as the magnum opus of the tournament, full of drama, tension and historic moments. However, over the past few seasons, the fixtures between the two teams have become completely mundane, with the balance now heavily tilted in favour of ‘Yellow Army’.
Earlier in the ongoing season, CSK inflicted the biggest defeat on MI in their IPL history, thrashing them by 103 runs, which was another reminder of the widening gap between the two teams.
Given the rich history of both teams, the continuous lopsided battles have left many baffled. With five titles each, CSK and MI have long stood as the twin pillars of IPL excellence. Their fixtures were often defined by thin margins and high-pressure moments, often leaving fans breathless till the final ball.
From blockbuster to one-sided affairs
The overall record between the two teams now stands fairly equal in IPL, with MI having 21 wins as opposed to CSK’s 20. However, the rivalry has taken a different tone since 2021, with CSK winning eight out of the last ten fixtures between the two sides.

One of the most defining voids in Mumbai Indians’ recent struggles against Chennai Super Kings has been the absence of their legendary all-rounder Kieron Pollard. For over a decade, Pollard was not just a player but a problem CSK could never quite solve, as they always brought the best out of him.
The Pollard factor
Pollard remains the second-highest run-scorer for MI against CSK with 636 runs to his name at an average of 35.33 (best among players with over 300 runs) and a strike rate of 169.6 (best among players over 200 runs). With the ball, he chipped in with 15 scalps (fourth highest) at an average of 27, often breaking partnerships at crucial junctures.
Pollard always thrived under pressure, and the best of it was seen during the 2013 IPL final as he guided MI to their maiden title, beating CSK with his all-round show. He first scored an unbeaten 60* (32) to rescue Mumbai from a collapse, guiding them to a competitive score of 148/9. Later, he also scalped one wicket and was deservedly adjudged Player of the Match for his all-round masterclass in his team’s historic triumph.
Can MI restore balance?
However, Pollard’s best performance against CSK came during the 2021 season as his blistering innings of 87* (34) helped MI chase down their then-highest target of 219, despite being 84/3 after 11 overs. Earlier, he also scalped two wickets, getting big wickets of Faf du Plessis and Suresh Raina.
In matches that MI won against CSK, Pollard’s average soared to 66, with his strike rate climbing to an imposing 180, while his bowling average also came down to 22. All in all, Pollard was Mumbai’s trump card in this storied rivalry.
As Mumbai continue their desperate attempt to fill his massive shoes, one thing is certain, they aren’t just missing a player but an X factor, who could tilt the balance in an instant.
