Punjab Kings chase elusive glory in IPL 2026

After coming within a single hit of lifting the IPL trophy last season, Punjab Kings enter the 2026 campaign with renewed determination to end a barren run that stretches back to the league’s inception. Alongside Delhi Capitals, they remain one of the two oldest franchises yet to taste championship success. 

But under Ricky Ponting’s guidance and Shreyas Iyer’s leadership, Punjab demonstrated last year that they are capable of going the distance. This season represents another chance to finally break the hoodoo.

Strengths

Solid Nucleus 

Continuity is a rare commodity in the IPL, yet Punjab have retained 21 players from the squad that reached the final. Such stability ensures role clarity and familiarity, reducing the adjustment period that often hampers teams at the start of a season. The players know their responsibilities, and the management knows what to expect.

Settled Core of Indigenous Talent 

Punjab’s reliance on Indian players is a significant advantage. With Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh, Nehal Wadhera, Shashank Singh, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal, and captain Shreyas Iyer forming the backbone, the franchise is not overly dependent on overseas signings. This depth of domestic talent allows flexibility in team composition.

Weaknesses

Absence of a Seasoned Campaigner 

The early stages of the season will be played without Lockie Ferguson, their most experienced overseas seamer. His decision to remain at home with his family is understandable, as his wife recently gave birth to their first child, but his absence leaves Punjab short of proven pace options. While Ferguson is expected to return later, the initial gap could expose the attack.

Memories of a Wretched Past 

Punjab’s history is littered with near misses and disappointments. For 18 seasons, they have chased the elusive title, only to fall short. The psychological burden of past failures, particularly last year’s agonizing six‑run defeat in the final, may weigh heavily. Overcoming those scars will be as important as any tactical adjustment.

Opportunities

Punjab’s robust squad gives them a genuine shot at silverware. More than that, the season offers Shreyas Iyer a personal opportunity. Another commanding campaign could strengthen his case for a return to India’s T20I setup. His leadership and batting form will be closely scrutinized, and success with Punjab could catapult him back into national reckoning. For the franchise, the chance to rewrite history and shed the underachievers tag is a powerful motivator.

Threats

Home advantage has been elusive for them. Punjab have won only three of their ten matches at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh. Unless they address this imbalance, their campaign risks being undermined by poor results at their own venue. In a league where margins are fine, failing to capitalize on home fixtures can prove decisive.
