When Rajasthan Royals came out at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati to chase down 129 against Chennai Super Kings to win their IPL 2026 campaign opener on Monday, there was barely a sense of urgency, but Vaibhav Sooryavanshi didn't care.

After watching the first two balls of the innings from the non-striker's end, the southpaw from Bihar got his first opportunity to face a ball and made a deliberate attempt to leave his imprints on the game.

The 15-year-old shuffled slightly towards his off stump against Matt Henry and tried to bludgeon a short of good length delivery angled away from him to the on-side. The ball didn't come off the meat of the blade, presenting a difficult opportunity which was shelled by debutant Kartik Sharma at mid-wicket, running backwards.

The shot revealed a deeply ingrained element about Sooryavanshi, that he doesn't care about reputation. If you are someone who has just turned 15 a day before the start of the 19th edition of the IPL and are about to face your first ball from a seasoned campaigner and one of the best seam bowlers in the world, you can be excused to tread with caution.

But that's not who Sooryavanshi is. He doesn't get overawed by the adversary. The second delivery he faced showcased yet another element of his nature, that he is fearless and doesn't get cold feet despite being nearly dismissed a ball before. The next ball was almost an action replay of the previous one, except it wasn't as wide and didn't get as big on Sooryavanshi, who swiveled and pulled it for a maximum over wide long-on.

Sooryavanshi was back in the hutch with 82 balls to play in Rajasthan's innings, and while he scored a 17-ball 52 at a strike rate (305.88) which no other batter was even close to reaching during the game, a few pundits can argue that he could've made much more out of the stint.

While it is a fair assessment and is certainly an area of the game that is a work in progress and will continue to be for a few years to come for Sooryavanshi, choosing to simply look from that standpoint would be a grave injustice to him.

If it wasn't for Sooryavanshi's blistering knock, Rajasthan Royals wouldn't have scaled their target down with 47 balls to spare and wouldn't be standing at the top of the points table with a net run rate of 4.171.

At just the tender age of 15, Sooryavanshi seems poised to be fast-tracked, and if his 15-ball fifty in Guwahati, the second-fastest against CSK in the IPL, wasn't a good enough reason, one needs to look at the impressive CV he has built for himself already.

While an India debut may not be imminent for the lad from Bihar, it seems inevitable as he puts the team above everything else, which resonates with Team India's mantra of "celebrating trophies and not milestones" under head coach Gautam Gambhir.
