Varun Chakravarthy, once India’s trump card and Kolkata Knight Riders’ enforcer, now finds himself unraveling under the spotlight. The aura of a mystery spinner lies in unpredictability, in the ability to keep batters guessing. But since the Super Eight stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Varun’s spells have been anything but mysterious, expensive, predictable, and increasingly targeted.
From trump card to target
His decline began in Ahmedabad against South Africa in India's first Super Eight fixture, where he bled 47 runs in four overs. Zimbabwe offered no respite, and West Indies took him apart with ease. By the semifinal against England, the mystery had all but vanished. Varun leaked 64 runs at 16 an over, looking like India’s weak link.

Even the final against New Zealand, with India defending a towering 255, brought no redemption. He conceded 39 in three overs, unable to apply pressure despite the cushion of runs.
IPL spillover
The nightmare spilled into IPL 2026. At Wankhede, Mumbai Indians’ batters lined him up, dispatching him for 48 runs without a wicket. Back at Eden Gardens, Ajinkya Rahane turned to his trump card early, hoping Varun could stem SRH’s charge.
Instead, Abhishek Sharma greeted him with a six over long‑on. What followed was carnage: Abhishek toyed with the field placements, forcing Rahane into constant adjustments, but every tweak was met with another boundary. Twenty‑five runs came off that over, and Rahane had no choice but to pull Varun out of the attack. When he returned later, the damage was already done; he finished with 0 for 31 in just two overs, his economy spiraling to 15.50.
Batting-friendly surfaces compound Varun's struggles
Varun’s struggles are compounded by the nature of the pitches he has bowled on. Surfaces in recent months have been unforgiving to spinners, flat decks, short boundaries, and dew‑laden evenings that tilt the contest heavily in favour of batters.
Mystery spin thrives on a bit of grip and assistance, but when the ball skids on, variations lose bite. In 2025, he played 20 T20Is at a superb economy of 7.08. But in just three months of 2026, he has already featured in 12 internationals, conceding at 9.18. Batters, armed with data and confidence, have lined him up with growing ease.
The way forward
Varun is in desperate need of a reset. Mystery bowlers thrive on surprise; overexposure makes them ordinary. Either he takes a break to refresh, or he must add new variations, fresh angles, and an altered pace to restore the mystique.
Every mysterious thing demands distance from prying eyes. The more it is revealed, the less it retains its power. Varun’s craft is no different. To remain potent, his mystery must either retreat into rarity or evolve into something new. Otherwise, what was once an enigma risks becoming ordinary.
