Travelling to certain venues can be a nightmare for visiting sides, and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) know that feeling all too well. Their chastening six‑wicket defeat to Mumbai Indians in the second match of IPL 2026 was yet another reminder of their struggles at the Wankhede.

This was KKR’s 11th loss in 13 games against MI at the venue, translating to a win percentage of just 15.38% and a loss percentage of 84.62%. The numbers speak for themselves: Wankhede has been a graveyard for KKR’s ambitions.

Batting Blues: Failure to match the venue’s tempo

KKR’s batting returns at Wankhede have consistently lagged behind the venue’s scoring benchmarks. Against MI, their average scoring rate in the powerplay stands at 7.93 runs per over, only marginally above the venue’s IPL average of 7.90. But the real gulf appears in the middle overs and at the death.

  • Middle overs: KKR score at 7.31 RPO, well below the venue average of 8.26.
  • Death overs: KKR lift to 9.51 RPO, but still trail the venue’s average of 10.85.

This inability to sustain tempo beyond the powerplay has repeatedly hurt them. Even in their 2026 defeat, they were going at 13 an over at the end of the powerplay but slumped below 11 in the middle overs, allowing MI’s bowlers to regain control.

Bowling Woes: Leaking runs at crucial phases

KKR’s struggles are not confined to the bat. Their bowling has consistently failed to adapt to Wankhede’s batting‑friendly surface.

  • Powerplay: KKR concede at 9.17 RPO, far higher than the venue’s average of 7.90.
  • Middle overs: They tighten slightly, conceding 8.09 RPO, which is fractionally better than the venue average of 8.26.
  • Death overs: The problem resurfaces: KKR leak at 11.10 RPO, compared to the venue average of 10.85.

The inability to control the new ball and the slog overs has left them exposed, with MI’s batting line‑up thriving in both phases.

KKR’s underwhelming record at Wankhede is a product of two intertwined issues: batting that fails to sustain scoring pressure and bowling that bleeds runs at key junctures. Against a side like MI, who are historically dominant at Wankhede, a win percentage of 62.37% (three wins in every five games approx) and tailor‑made for the conditions, these shortcomings have been ruthlessly exposed.

Until KKR find a way to recalibrate their batting tempo across phases and tighten their economy in the powerplay and death overs, the Wankhede will remain their most unforgiving destination in the IPL.
