Tilak Varma rose to prominence after finishing as the second-highest run-getter for Hyderabad at the 2021-22 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He scored 215 runs in seven innings at an average of 35.83 and a strike rate of 147.26. The southpaw immediately got on the radar of Mumbai Indians’ scouts and was picked up by the franchise at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 auction for Rs 1.70 crore.

Varma had an impressive debut season for the five-time champions, scoring 397 runs from 14 innings at an average of 36.09 and a strike rate of 131.02 with two fifties. He followed it up with another 343 runs in the following season, which even opened the doors for an India debut for the youngster.

Tilak took to international cricket like fish to water, scoring 39 (22) on his T20I debut vs West Indies and followed it up with a half-century (51 off 41) and 49* (37) in his second and third outings, respectively. After some mixed performances in his debut year and a 416-run season in IPL 2024, Varma made his comeback in T20Is in November 2024 on the tour to South Africa.

Being promoted to number three, the southpaw slammed successive centuries to stake his claim in the middle order. His consistent performance even helped him earn a spot in the MI retentions list for the IPL 2025 ahead of Ishan Kishan. Varma continued to play match-winning knocks for India in the shortest format, the most famous one being his unbeaten 69* (53) in the Asia Cup 2025 final against Pakistan.

The youngster further made valuable contributions in India’s successful T20 World Cup title defence on home soil earlier this year. Varma has only grown in stature with every tournament and continues to be a vital vog in the batting lineup for both India and Mumbai Indians.

Here’s a comparison of Tilak Varma’s IPL and BCCI salary:

Varma was retained for Rs 8 crore by Mumbai Indians (MI) for the IPL 2026. On the other hand, he earns Rs 1 crore from his BCCI central contract, being part of the C category of players.
