Sameer Rizvi, a belligerent middle-order batter, began his cricketing journey in 2011 at the Gandhibagh Academy in MeeruT under the supervision of his maternal uncle, Tanqib Akhtar. In the same year, Rizvi caught Suresh Raina’s eye with his impressive fielding efforts as a five-year-old, receiving his sunglasses as a gift while Raina was leading Uttar Pradesh against Saurashtra in a Ranji Trophy match in Meerut.
At 20, Rizvi hogged the limelight in the UP T20 League by smacking the most sixes for Kanpur Superstars, finishing the campaign with 455 runs in nine innings, including two blazing hundreds. That performance culminated in a trial at three IPL franchises, including Punjab Kings.

While he had to miss the trials due to UP's Under-23 commitments, he showcased his potential in his maiden appearance at the Under-23s with a 65-ball 91in a one-day game against Rajasthan. Rizvi continued his red-hot form in the tournament to top the run-scoring charts, headlining UP’s titular triumph in the tournament, including a match-winning 84 from 50 balls in the final.
In the 20-overs Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he ripped apart Tamil Nadu's spin trio of Varun Chakravarthy, R Sai Kishore and Washington Sundar in Dehradun with an unbeaten 75 off 46 balls to bolster his six-hitting reputation.
Touted as a right-handed Suresh Raina, Rizvi impressed during CSK's pre-season camp in March 2023 with his range-hitting and six-hitting. He expectedly turned heads during the IPL auction in December that year as Chennai Super Kings (CSK), not known at the time for investing in uncapped talent, splurged INR 8.40 crore to acquire his services.
Staying true to his spin-hitting reputation, Rizvi dispatched the first ball he faced in the IPL, off Rashid Khan, for a six. However, he could score merely 51 runs in eight innings and was subsequently released by CSK.
He found a taker in Delhi Capitals (DC) at the mega auction before IPL 2025, picked for INR 95 lakh. He had a middling run in the tournament, tallying 121 runs in four innings, although his unbeaten 58 off 25 helped DC's end their campaign with a win. Rizvi was retained by DC for IPL 2026 for his existing price of INR 95 lakh.
