Bangladesh appoint Litton Das as new ODI captain

Bangladesh have announced Litton Kumer Das as their new ODI captain in a bombshell announcement. Litton, 31, takes over from spin-bowling allrounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who led the side for a little over a year.

Under Mehidy's leadership, Bangladesh defeated Australia for the first time in an ODI series, and it came in June on home turf. He famously guided Bangladesh to the series win with an unbeaten 22 off as many deliveries, chasing 192 in the second ODI, despite being struck on the side of the helmet by a bouncer from Nathan Ellis. The blow required immediate medical attention on the field, but Mehidy carried on and took the team over the line.

Mehidy led Bangladesh in 24 matches, winning 10 and losing 14. He has a win percentage of 41.67% and a loss percentage of 58.33%. 

The decision to remove Mehidy comes in the aftermath of Bangladesh's mortifying 2-1 ODI series loss at the hands of Zimbabwe in Harare. 

Litton is now in charge of both the T20I and ODI squads, whereas Najmul Hossain Shanto will continue to lead the Test team.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced the change in leadership on social media. Notably, Litton has led the side in seven ODIs, with three wins, as many losses and a no result. The wicketkeeper batter has gathered far more leadership experience in T20Is. In 31 T20Is as captain, Litton has guided the team to victory on 16 occasions, and suffered 14 losses, whereas one game couldn't yield a result. He wields a win percentage of 51.61% in the shortest format of the game.

Bangladesh are slated to tour Australia for a two-match Test series in August, which is a part of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle. The tour will get underway on August 6, with a three-day warm-up game between Bangladesh and Cricket Australia XI at the Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin.

The first Test will also be held at the same venue, starting August 13, whereas the second match will be played at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay from August 22 onwards. Australia are at the top of the WTC points table. They have accumulated a total points percentage of 87.50 with seven wins and a solitary loss after eight games.

Meanwhile, the Bangla Tigers are fourth on the table with a points percentage of 58.33%. They have two wins, a loss and a draw after four games.
