Delhi Capitals (DC) have appointed former Sri Lankan fast bowler Chaminda Vaas as their bowling coach for IPL 2027. The 52-year-old replaces Munaf Patel, who served in the role over the past two seasons. Vaas joins a revamped Delhi Capitals coaching setup, with the franchise recently appointing Sourav Ganguly as head coach and Yuvraj Singh as assistant coach.
Vaas remains Sri Lanka's most successful fast bowler in Tests and ODIs. He claimed 355 wickets in Tests and 400 wickets in One-Day Internationals, earning a reputation for making early breakthroughs with the new ball.
Vaas brings considerable international coaching experience to the role, making him a strong addition to the Delhi Capitals setup. He has served as Sri Lanka men's bowling coach across three separate stints: from 2012 to 2015, 2016 to 2017, and again in 2022. He began his coaching career with the New Zealand men's team as a bowling consultant and also served with Ireland during the 2016 ICC Men's World T20 in India.
Vaas also boasts coaching experience in franchise cricket. He was part of NYS Lagos' coaching staff during the 2024 Zim Afro T10 League and served as head coach of Kandy Royals in the 2026 Lanka Premier League (LPL).
The overhaul of Delhi Capitals' coaching setup stems from an agreement reached between the franchise's co-owners, GMR Sports India Pvt. Ltd. and JSW Sports, following IPL 2024. Under the arrangement, the two ownership groups alternate control of the franchise's cricket operations in two-year cycles. GMR Sports oversaw the team during IPL 2025 and 2026, appointing former India cricketer Venugopal Rao as Director of Cricket, ex-India batter Hemang Badani as head coach, and Munaf Patel as bowling coach.
Delhi Capitals finished sixth on the IPL 2026 points table. The Axar Patel-led side won seven games and lost as many to finish on 14 points, which wasn't enough to land them a place in the playoffs.
