Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Delhi Capitals (DC) have appointed former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh as Assistant & Batting Coach ahead of the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League. Yuvraj’s appointment comes days after DC appointed former India captain Sourav Ganguly as their head coach.
Yuvraj had an illustrious career, having represented India in 304 ODIs, 40 Tests, and 58 T20Is and played a key role in the team’s two World Cup triumphs. He was given the prestigious Player of the Tournament in India’s triumphant campaign in the 2011 ODI World Cup, for scoring 362 runs and taking 15 wickets.
The legendary cricketer has mentored several established and emerging Indian stars in recent years, including Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill. However, he has never held a coaching role in an official capacity and is set to make his coaching debut with Delhi Capitals.
Speaking on his appointment, Yuvraj recalled his playing days with DC and expressed his excitement about teaming up with Sourav Ganguly again.
"I am excited to begin a new chapter in my life with the Delhi Capitals. I have an old association with the franchise and know the owners well, which makes this a special opportunity for me. I’m also looking forward to teaming up with Dada, this time as coaches. Coaching is something I am truly passionate about, and I cannot wait to get started with this extremely talented squad. I’m sure it’s going to be an exciting journey for me, and I look forward to contributing to the team’s success," said Yuvraj in a media release.
Yuvraj's IPL career
In 2015, Delhi Capitals (then Delhi Daredevils) shelled out a whopping INR 16 crore to acquire Yuvraj's services, which made him the most expensive player in IPL history at the time. He went on to represent the franchise in all 14 matches that season.
In his distinguished IPL career, Yuvraj featured in 132 matches, scoring 2,750 runs and taking 36 wickets. He won the much-coveted IPL trophy twice in 2016 with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and in 2019 with Mumbai Indians (MI).
