India off-spinner Deepti Sharma has etched her name in the history books, becoming the highest wicket taker in women’s international cricket. Sharma broke legendary India bowler Jhulan Goswami’s record (355 wickets) to rise to the top during India’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 fixture against Australia on Sunday, June 28 at Lord's.
Sharma dismissed Australia's Beth Mooney in her second over to achieve her 356th scalp. The off-spinner got the southpaw holed out to long on, dismissing her for the sixth time in her career.
Deepti has been in rich form in the ongoing tournament, having scalped seven wickets so far. She started with a record-breaking five-wicket haul against Pakistan, guiding India to a 64-run victory. Sharma registered the best-ever bowling performance for India in WT20Is, with figures of 5/10 in four overs.
During the match, she also became the highest wicket-taker in WT20Is, having 168 scalps to her name from 149 matches. Later, against the Netherlands, she returned figures of 1/26 in three overs and got level with Jhulan Goswami in the all-time wicket taker’s list.
After going wicketless against South Africa and Bangladesh, Sharma finally surpassed the legendary India seamer to etch her name in the history books.
