India retain Asian Games core for Women's Asia Cup, except one change

India have announced a 15-member squad for the Women's Asia Cup to be held later this month, with a solitary change compared to the team named for the Asian Games in Japan. Right-arm off-break allrounder Shreyanka Patil has not been named in the Asia Cup squad. It clearly suggests that she hasn't recovered from the ankle ligament injury which she sustained against Netherlands in the Women's T20 World Cup in England on June 17.

Leg-spinning allrounder Prema Rawat has been added in place of Patil. Coincidentally, it was Rawat who had replaced Patil at the Women's T20 World Cup in the remainder of India's matches. However, Patil is a part of the Asian Games squad, but her participation in the continental event is subject to fitness.

India's wicketkeeper batter Yastika Bhatia hasn't found a place in the squad. She was also dropped from the team picked for the Asian Games after a lacklustre batting performance at the T20 World Cup. The southpaw could only manage 41 runs across three innings in four games, averaging 13.66 at a strike rate of 117.14 with the help of just six boundaries.

However, Bhatia kept her composure despite the selection setback and scored a terrific hundred in the maiden women's Test at Lord's when India squared off against hosts England just days after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup.

Notably, India are the most dominant side to have set foot in the Women's Asia Cup. They have won a record seven titles. Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are the only other sides to win the tournament. Sri Lanka had beaten India by eight wickets in the final of the previous edition in Dambulla on July 28, 2024.
