Punjab Kings (PBKS) suffered their fifth successive defeat of the Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026) on Thursday, May 14, losing by six wickets against Mumbai Indians (MI) at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala. After being put in to bat first, Punjab Kings posted a good score of 200/8 in their allotted 20 overs, riding on a half-century from Prabhsimran Singh (57 off 32).

Shardul Thakur scalped four wickets for MI and was instrumental in triggering a dramatic collapse in the middle overs as PBKS went from 107/1 to 140/7 in a space of 31 deliveries. However, brilliant cameos from Azmatullah Omarzai (38 off 17), Vishnu Vinod (15* off 8) and Xavier Bartlett (18* off 7) helped Punjab post 200 on the board.

In reply, MI thrillingly chased down the target in 19.5 overs with Tilak Varma playing a breathtaking innings to take his team over the line. Apart from him, Ryan Rickelton (48 off 23) and Will Jacks (25* off 10) also made valuable contributions.

Meanwhile, MI’s victory didn't affect the IPL 2026 points table as they maintained ninth spot with eight points from 12 games. On the other hand, Punjab also remained in fourth spot with 13 points from 12 games.

However, the loss has left them in a precarious position with regard to their playoffs chances as PBKS desperately need to win both of their remaining two fixtures to have a chance to qualify for the next stage.

What did the captains say:

Winning Captain, Jasprit Bumrah (Mumbai Indians):

Yeah, one from one (smiles). Both teams played good cricket and we really pulled back well. Little bit, but the wicket in this game looked a little bit drier than the previous one. Maybe it wasn't as cold as it was in the last game. Whatever we saw in the previous game and reading this game, holding your length was key. That was the plan and credit to all bowlers and they kept their nerve as well. I think Tilak's knock and the way Shardul bowled, both deserve equal credit. Tilak kept his shape, Jacks also contributed. I have captained a Test match, I have captained T20s and now the only game left is ODI cricket, but I don't see that happening. Jokes apart, very happy. Had good fun, good weather, great ground so enjoyed my time.

Losing Captain, Shreyas Iyer (Punjab Kings):

(On the loss tonight) Well, absolutely a tough pill to swallow, but I don't want to pinpoint at any situation over here because it was a great game of cricket. Well fought game. He (Tilak) played amazing, he was selecting his shots pretty well, and he maneuvered the field nicely, so credit to him. (On Azmat) Certainly, at a point, we were looking at around 170 to 180, and from there on, he simply changed the momentum towards us. Getting those scoops of sixes, and from 16th or 17th over, from there on, we gained the momentum and getting to 200 was a commendable performance for him. (Taking on RCB in a day game?) Definitely excited for the next opportunity. It's an afternoon game, and we've got to win two out of two. It's going to be an exciting two games. Can't wait to play them.
