Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) registered a thrilling two-wicket win against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Match 54 of the Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026) on Sunday, May 10, at Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium, Raipur. Batting first, Mumbai Indians (MI) were restricted to 166/7 in their allotted 20 overs, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, running through their batting inside the powerplay.

It took heroic knocks from Tilak Varma (57 off 42) and Naman Dhir (47 off 32) to guide their team to a decent score. The duo added 82 runs for the fourth wicket off 57 balls to calm the nerves in their dressing room.

However, following their dismissals, MI failed to finish on a high, scoring just 56 runs from their last 45 balls. In reply, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) thrillingly chased down the target on the last ball, courtesy of a brilliant innings from Krunal Pandya after they were reduced to 39/3 in 5.1 overs.

The game went all the way down to the last over, with RCB needing 15 runs to win, and Raj Bajwa was entrusted with the ball. However, the hosts held their nerve and eventually got over the line as momentum continued to swing from one side to the other. Corbin Bosch (4/26) and Deepak Chahar (2/33) bowled their hearts out for Mumbai, but it all went in vain.

Meanwhile, following their victory, RCB climbed to the top of the IPL 2026 points table with 14 points from 11 games. On the other hand, MI got knocked out of the competition along with Lucknow Super Giants as they continue to hold the second last spot (ninth), with six points from 11 games.

Player of the Match

Bhuvneshwar Kumar was adjudged Player of the Match for his terrific bowling performance. He first dismissed Ryan Rickelton (2 off 4), Rohit Sharma (22 off 10) and Suryakumar Yadav (0 off 1) inside the powerplay. Bhuvneshwar later returned to get another crucial wicket of a well-set Tilak Varma to finish with figures of 4/23 in four overs.

Later, he also hit a crucial six (7* off 2) in the last over, to bring the equation under control and guided RCB over the line alongside Rasikh Salam Dar.

Turning Point

On the second ball of the 18th over, bowled by AM Ghazanfar, Krunal Pandya hit him towards long on, where Naman Dhir caught the ball. He threw it towards Tilak Varma before going over the boundary. However, Tilak didn’t go for the relay catch, thinking Dhir had touched the fence.

The replays confirmed that Dhir had no part of his body touching the boundary, which meant that Krunal would’ve been dismissed, had Tilak completed the grab. Krunal ended up hitting two sixes in the over to bring the equation down to 18 needed off last 12 balls.

What did the captains say:

Winning Captain, Rajat Patidar (Royal Challengers Bengaluru):

It's normal now. It was a very tight match, a great game. KP is the man, who has done it for the team. It was our decision, we had discussed in team meetings. We wanted to give him opportunity at number 5 and he done it pretty well. There's a lot of experience, and such players do it for the team under pressure, and it such situations. It's unbelievable, his control on the ball. It's very difficult to play Bhuvi on this kind of a wicket. Right now we are not bothered about the table, we want to play good cricket, rather than looking at the table. Our bowlers did a tremendous job to restrict them. That was easily chaseable, but to be honest we didn't deserve to win this match. We shoud have chased that target easily. We have a batting line-up capable enough.

Losing Captain, Suryakumar Yadav (Mumbai Indians):

I think he (Raj Bawa) had been practicing that (death bowling) really well and he was a complete different all rounder this year. Almost pulled it off for us. I think we were 10-15 runs short. We can say wrong timing of wickets (while batting). Naman and Tilak batted beautifully and showed character. I think these are the things you practice a lot with the fielding. The way Tilak came back and took the catch again, showed that he wanted to do something special. Part of the game. I think we can just try and play this game because we love it. Though we are not used to being in this position often. Hard pill to swallow. Hopefully we will come back well next year. Very proud of the way he (Bosch) bowled in the powerplay and in all phases.
