Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) captain Riyan Parag has undergone surgery on his right shoulder, following the conclusion of the Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026). Parag-led Rajasthan to Qualifier 2 of the tournament, where they were knocked out after a seven-wicket defeat against Gujarat Titans (GT).

He informed about his surgery through a post on his Instagram handle, but his rehabilitation duration is not known yet. The 24-year-old was named vice-captain of the India A squad for the ongoing 50-overs tri-series in Sri Lanka. However, he got ruled out with a hamstring injury and was replaced by Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Parag’s hamstring troubled him during the second half of the IPL 2026 as he missed two matches for RR against Gujarat Titans (GT) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). He returned to play his team’s must-win last league fixture against Mumbai Indians (MI) and later acknowledged that he had played despite not being fully fit.

He further played both playoffs matches against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Gujarat Titans (GT), and was seen in visible discomfort while running between the wickets. Parag shared a post-surgery photograph with his fans on social media, recalling the arduous journey of managing to play with his injury for the last two years.

"For everyone who's been asking, the surgery is done and went well. The past two years have tested me in ways I never expected. There were good days, frustrating days, and days when simply getting through a game was a challenge. But I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. Now comes a different challenge- recovery, rehab and patience. I'll be back doing what I love soon. See you on the other side,” wrote Parag in his Instagram post.

Parag's shoulder injury history

Parag first encountered the shoulder issue during IPL 2025 and had been managing it in coordination with the BCCI's medical staff. While he was advised to undergo surgery, doctors had told him that he could delay it until the issue began to affect his game. Parag eventually decided to undergo surgery after consulting with the BCCI's medical team.

Once discharged from the hospital, he will begin rehabilitation under the supervision of the BCCI medical staff at the Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru.
