India’s ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill has won the ICC Player of the Month award for September, 2026 for a record-extending fifth time. Gill won ahead of fellow nominees, his compatriot Abhishek Sharma and Zimbabwe's Sikandar Raza.

He was adjudged winner following a prolific run in India’s recent ODI series victory against West Indies, where he was also named Player of the Series.

Gill scored 333 runs in the first two ODIs held in September, with a century (110 off 108) in the opener and an unbeaten record-breaking double century in the second match in Guwahati.

The opening batter scored 223* off 133 balls, including 26 fours and eight sixes, helping India chase down 406 in 43.3 overs with 39 balls to spare, the second-highest successful run chase in ODI history.

He brought up his hundred in 62 balls, the fastest by an Indian captain in ODIs, and further slammed the fastest double century in the format, reaching the landmark in just 117 balls. He also registered the highest individual score in a successful ODI chase.

It was his fifth ICC Men's Player of the Month award, having previously received the honour in January 2023, September 2023, February 2025 and July 2025, extending his record as the men's player with the most wins.

Shafali wins the award second time

Meanwhile, star India batter Shafali Verma also won the ICC Women's Player of the Month for September 2026. It’s the second time that the India opener has won the award, after she first won it in November 2025, following India’s historic Women’s World Cup triumph on home soil.

The award acknowledges Shafali’s remarkable contribution in India’s back-to-back triumphs in the Asia Cup and the Asian Games 2026. She scored 360 runs in seven T20Is, averaging a sensational 72 and a phenomenal strike rate of 184.61. The right-arm off-spinner also contributed with six wickets at an average of 13 and an economy rate of 4.33.

The 22-year-old was also the leading run-scorer at the Asia Cup in the UAE with 236 runs in five innings, including a brilliant knock of 64 in the semi-final against Bangladesh and 68 in the final against Sri Lanka, as India secured a record-extending eighth Asia Cup title.

She continued her form at the Asian Games in Japan, scoring 188 runs in three innings, where she also slammed a maiden T20I century against Bangladesh, smashing 100 off 49 balls in the semi-final.

In the gold-medal match against Sri Lanka, Shafali contributed 48 runs with the bat, guiding India to a massive 147-run victory to successfully defend their gold medal.
