The stage is set for a blockbuster showdown in Qualifier 2 of the Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026) as Rajasthan Royals (RR) will be up against Gujarat Titans (GT) on Friday, May 29, at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur, New Chandigarh.
GT would thank their stars heading into the fixture as they’re getting a second chance to make it to the final after suffering a 92-run defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Qualifier 1.

A net run rate difference of +0.171 has ensured that they’re still alive in the tournament, or GT could’ve faced the exit like Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), who missed the top two positions on the IPL 2026 points table by a whisker and were denied the luxury of a second shot at the final.
However, despite Gujarat’s good fortune, they find themselves in a really tricky situation. It will take a herculean effort for the Shubman Gill-led side to recover from the soul-crushing defeat against RCB. To make matters worse, they’re about to be served a taste of their own medicine as they come face-to-face with a menacing Jofra Archer.
GT to have a taste of their own medicine
While GT are the most successful bowling attack in the powerplay in IPL 2026 with 31 wickets to their name, Archer has also been instrumental in running through batting lineups in the first six overs. With 14 scalps in his kitty in the powerplay phase, the England speedster has been defining matches for Rajasthan Royals with the new ball.
Through his terrifying spells, Archer has almost turned the first six overs into a survival test for the opposition batters. Archer proves to be an even bigger threat for Gujarat, having accounted for their captain, Shubman Gill, thrice in his IPL career, while giving away just 36 runs off 30 balls. In the high-pressure knockout game, the psychological edge could prove invaluable.
GT’s famed top order, consisting of Gill, Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler, has been in rich form but has also made the team heavily dependent on their performances.
Gujarat's over-dependency on top 3
The troika has contributed to 67.02% of the total runs scored by their team this season, which is the highest among all ten franchises. Even though Buttler has a great record against Archer, he will head into the fixture under immense pressure, knowing fully well that another mistake will knock them out of the competition.
As far as Archer is concerned, he’s been at his ferocious best, clocking over 145 kmph consistently and giving his famous ‘chin music’ to the batters. Against SRH, he ripped through Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Travis Head, effectively closing out the game in the powerplay itself.
Who will win the powerplay battle?
Earlier, against Mumbai Indians, Archer got the big scalp of Rohit Sharma and also dismissed the in-form Naman Dhir inside the powerplay. He later returned to get the prized scalp of a well-set Hardik Pandya to seal the game in Rajasthan’s favour.
With GT heading into the upcoming match, having second thoughts about their batting strength, Archer will look to fully exploit their vulnerabilities on the same pitch, where he sent 150 kmph thunderbolts at SRH’s batters.
Gujarat have one of the lowest run rates this season in the powerplay of 9.66. It remains to be seen if they'll bring a change in their approach and counter-attack Archer, or if they will just see him off without taking any risks.
As both teams face off for a spot in the final, GT’s powerplay battle against Archer could well define who would eventually come out on top in the fixture.
