Under the bright lights of the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) announced themselves as genuine contenders for the Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026) crown. The Pat Cummins-led side qualified for the playoffs alongside Gujarat Titans(GT) following a five-wicket win against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), now leaving only one spot for the next stage of the tournament.
On a surface where batting never looked entirely comfortable, captain Pat Cummins led from the front with a superb spell of fast bowling, returning figures of 3/28 in four overs to restrict CSK to 180/7. The speedster got the prized scalps of in-form batters Sanju Samson, Kartik Sharma, as well as the CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad.

In the second innings, solid knocks from Ishan Kishan (70 off 47) and Heinrich Klaasen (47 off 26) helped their team get over the finishing line as they chased down the target in 19 overs. It’s the second time under Cummins' leadership that SRH have made it to the IPL playoffs. Earlier in 2024, he led the team to their third final, where they lost to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
Cummins missed the first half of the ongoing season due to back injury and joined the team from the eighth game onwards, guiding them to four wins out of six matches so far. SRH even have a golden chance to finish in the top two of the IPL 2026 points table, with their last league game scheduled against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
The Cummins' effect
If SRH beat RCB and GT lose their last fixture against CSK, then the Pat Cummins-led side will have a guaranteed spot in the top two spots of the table, which will give them two chances to seal their spot in the final.
Cummins has been one of the pillars of SRH's success in the ongoing season, having taken eight wickets from six innings at an average of 24.37 and an economy of 8.12.
The SRH skipper even won Player of the Match award in his team’s 33-run win against Punjab Kings (PBKS) after registering figures of 2/34 in four overs. Cummins took crucial scalps of Priyansh Arya (1 off 3) and Suryansh Shedge (25 off 17) to derail PBKS' chase.
Remarkable tactical acumen
He has marshalled his bowling resources brilliantly, rotating his pacers cleverly and constantly staying a step ahead of opposition batters. Against Punjab, Cummins cleverly plotted Priyansh Arya’s dismissal, playing a double-bluff against the opening batter and surprising him with a bouncer.
On Monday, against CSK, he again set up Sanju Samson to induce an outside edge from his bat to dismiss him cheaply. Not just his individual performances, the SRH skipper has also given freedom to the entire bowling unit, as the supporting cast has also risen magnificently around their captain.
Praful Hinge (11 wickets), Sakib Hussain (14 wickets), and Eshan Malinga (17 wickets) have all bowled match-winning spells, making SRH a potent bowling attack.
SRH peaking at the right time
In the batting department, Heinrich Klaasen (555 runs), Abhishek Sharma (507 runs) Ishan Kishan (490 runs), and Travis Head (367 runs) have been plundering runs, forming the most formidable lineup of the season.
The bowling unit has found rhythm, batting is firing collectively, and the captain is leading with authority. All in all, SRH are peaking at the right time and have a real chance to add the second trophy to their cabinet. With captain Cummins at the helm, they head into the playoffs as clear title favourites.
