Mumbai Indians (MI) tasted a rare victory in the Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026), beating Punjab Kings (PBKS) by six wickets at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala. Chasing a target of 201, MI couldn’t keep up with the required run rate for a major part of the run chase, needing 72 runs off the last 30 balls.
However, Tilak Varma played a masterful innings of 75* (33), studded with six fours and as many sixes to help MI get over the line on the penultimate ball of the innings. Varma stitched a match-winning stand with Will Jacks (25* off 10) of 56 runs off just 20 balls to complete the run chase and took the Player of the Match honours.

It was the knock that hinted at the emergence of a batter ready to shoulder Mumbai Indians’ future. Varma has been one of the rare positives in an otherwise forgettable season for MI. The southpaw is the second-highest run scorer of the team with 336 runs from 12 innings at an average of 33.60 and a strike rate of 162.31.
Varma emerges as true match-winner
However, even Varma didn’t have a memorable start to the season, scoring just 43 runs from the first five innings. He finally found his form against Gujarat Titans by slamming a 45-ball century and earned the Player of the Match award in Mumbai’s 99-run victory.
Varma continued to blow hot and cold, registering his second fifty-plus score after five innings against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, scoring 57 (42), albeit in a losing cause. While MI’s campaign has largely failed to hit top gear, the 23-year-old has continued to showcase maturity far beyond his age.
The poor form of star batter Suryakumar Yadav left a massive void in MI's middle order, as they failed to post or chase imposing totals. As a result, they're languishing at the second-last spot on the IPL 2026 points table with eight points.
Mumbai's transition era begins
However, Varma’s performances portend a bright future for the five-time champions, who're likely to tinker with their batting for the next edition. The 23-year-old has already proven his calibre at the international level, making him a regular mainstay in the MI camp, with a potential leadership option for the future.
As MI continue to navigate through their longest trophy drought in IPL history, some tough calls are on the horizon. With Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav in their late 30s, the onus of carrying the batting responsibility will fall on the shoulders of Varma, Naman Dhir and Ryan Rickelton, who all have impressed in the ongoing season.
With two more games remaining in the league stage, MI must utilise their bench strength to earmark players for the future, having already been knocked out of the playoffs race. And while IPL 2026 may ultimately go down as a forgettable chapter in Mumbai Indians’ storied history, it may also be remembered as the season where Tilak Varma truly announced himself as the face of MI’s future, ushering them into a new era.
