Four stars, two rivalries, one trophy: The battles shaping the IPL 2026 final

The stage is set for a blockbuster showdown as Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) prepare to defend their Indian Premier League (IPL) title against Gujarat Titans (GT) in the IPL 2026 final at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. There isn’t much to separate the two teams as both finished in the top two positions in the IPL 2026 points table, with 18 points each.

However, when the stakes are high, it’s often the small battles during the contest that go on to define the outcome of the game. Both teams are studded with match-winners from top to bottom, capable of single-handedly turning the game by weaving their magic on the field.

In the big finals, good starts are extremely crucial as teams can build on their momentum as the game progresses and hold an advantage over their opponent. In the upcoming final as well, the onus will be on the new-ball bowling pairs and opening batters to set the tone for their respective sides, who are both eyeing their second IPL title.

For RCB, all eyes will be on their star batter Virat Kohli, who is again having a prolific season with the bat, having scored 600 runs from 15 innings at an average of 50 and a strike rate of 164.38. Throughout the season, Kohli has set the tone at the top, providing RCB with aggressive starts that have become the hallmark of their campaign.

Kohli vs Rabada: A rivalry that never disappoints

He will be up against one of his fiercest rivals in Kagiso Rabada, who has dismissed him four times out of 11 innings in IPL. However, it hasn't been a one-way traffic as the batting stalwart has also given it back to Rabada, scoring at a strike rate of 157.14 against the speedster. 

The Kohli vs Rabada battle has been the highlight of all three meetings between the two teams in the season so far. In the first fixture, the opener took on Rabada inside the powerplay, whacking him for two boundaries. He again clobbered him for another four, followed by a maximum upon Rabada’s return in the 11^th over. Having survived the new-ball threat, Kohli was eventually adjudged Player of the Match for guiding RCB to a five-wicket win with his match-winning innings of 81 (44).

Kohli vs Rabada: Round 2

In their second meeting of the season, during Match 42 in Ahmedabad, Kohli again launched an onslaught against the South Africa speedster, collecting five successive boundaries off him in his first over. However, Rabada had the last laugh after hurrying Kohli into a mistimed shot with his searing pace and getting him caught at mid-wicket for 28 (13). The dismissal had a huge impact on the game, as after sending the RCB opener back early, GT went on to win by four wickets.

Kohli vs Rabada: Round 3

After taming Kohli in their second meeting, Rabada was charged up as he ran in to bowl during their third meeting of the season, in Qualifier 1 in Dharamsala. The RCB opener had a subdued start, failing to get Rabada away and being constantly beaten on his edges. 

He finally got his innings going by collecting a boundary in Rabada's second over towards fine leg. It was in the third over, when Kohli again exerted his dominance over the speedster, milking him for two fours and a six and neutralising his threat with the new ball. He was eventually dismissed for 43 (25) after chopping one back onto his stumps, but had clearly won his battle against Rabada as RCB sealed a comprehensive 92-run victory.

Gill vs Bhuvneshwar: Prince faces his biggest IPL challenge

For Gujarat Titans (GT), the onus once again will be on their captain Shubman Gill, who’s fresh from a match-winning century in Qualifier 2 against Rajasthan Royals (RR). Gill enters the final as the second-highest run scorer of the season with 722 runs to his name from 15 innings. Elegant, composed and devastating when in full flow, he has been the heartbeat of GT’s batting unit.

However, Gill will be up against his arch-nemesis Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the final. The veteran seamer has been the thorn in Gill's flesh, having dismissed him most times in his IPL career (six dismissals out of 16 innings).

Gill averages just 13.33 against Bhuvneshwar and also has an abominable strike rate of 101.26. Even in a season where the Gujarat Titans' captain has dismantled several bowling attacks, Bhuvneshwar has remained his toughest examination, who’s got him out twice.

In the first meeting of the season during Match 34, Bhuvneshwar bowled just two balls against Gill, with the GT captain scoring one run off him.

Later in the second game in Ahmedabad, Gill came prepared to take on the seamer, hitting him for a four and a six in his first over. However, he couldn’t survive too long against his arch-rival and hit him straight to cover at Virat Kohli.

In the third meeting during Qualifier 1, Bhuvneshwar again got rid of the GT skipper, dismantling his stumps with a peach of an in-swinger, stamping his authority on the backbone of GT's batting lineup. 

Who will win the final battles?

As all four stars come head-to-head to renew hostilities in the final, the outcome of their respective duels could have a significant bearing on the match. One battle pits a modern batting great against a world-class fast bowler who refuses to back down. The other sees a prolific young captain trying to overcome a veteran seamer who has repeatedly found a way to dismiss him.

As RCB and GT battle for the IPL 2026 crown under the lights in Ahmedabad, the two mini-contests could ultimately decide who gets their hands on the trophy. In a final expected to be decided by the finest of margins, the first few overs may not just set the tone, but could well determine who takes the silverware home.
